Georgia  

In 1732 Pastor Urlsperger began recruiting for the Georgia colony. He was able to convince some of the Lutheran exiles from Salzburg who had gone to southwest Germany to continue to Georgia. He was only able to get some 150 colonists of the desired 300. Emigrants recruited for the Georgia colony also came from the Palatinate, Switzerland, and Swabia from 1734-1752. Most of the emigrant went in to the town of Ebenezer which was established in 1734. Most of the emigrants in 1737 were from Swabia.

When the Archbishop von Firmian began his war on the Protestants in Austria in 1731-1732, over 22,000 were forced to leave the country. Although most found exile in East Prussia, others settled near Berlin, in the state of Hannover, and in the Netherlands. About 80 families emigrated to Georgia from 1734-1738. Their descendants settled in Savannah, Georgia and formed an association in 1925.  

Picton Press has published several books concerning the Salzburgers in Georgia including:The Salzburger Expulsion Lists by Lewis Bunker Rohrbach, 1999; Detailed Reports on the Salzburger Emigrants Who Settled in America by J.M. Bolzius and I.C. Gronau, 1968-1995; and The Salzburger Sata: Religious Exiles and Other Germans Along the Savannah by George Fenwick Jones, 1983.

In an article by George Fenwick Jones in 1988 (Detailed Reports on the Salzburger Emigrants 10:131-168) and expanded by Lewis Bunker Rohrbach in 1999 (The Salzburger Expulsion Lists pp.599-629), the names of German and Salzburg emigrants on transport ships to Georgia were compiled. It is hoped that in time the origin of each of these emigrants can be identified and the names of the complete families, ages, occupations, and other information can be added to reconstruct passenger lists similar as has been done for the New England and some of the Pennsylvania emigrant groups.
